Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico, criticized Trump's tariffs and claimed that they harm the US economy more than Mexico's. She emphasized the need for cooperation rather than imposition while addressing the issues of fentanyl trafficking and the criminalization of migrants. She argued for a collective response to drug-related challenges faced by both nations.

Sheinbaum Critiques Trump's Tariffs and Drug Policy

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, criticized the tariffs imposed by Trump, pointing out that they are detrimental to the United States due to the increase in prices of imported products. Furthermore, she refuted the accusations about fentanyl trafficking and the relationship with organized crime.

In a statement, Sheinbaum demanded not to criminalize Mexicans in the United States, asserted that they are exemplary workers, and defended Mexico's fight against drug trafficking. In light of the situation, she proposed a working group to address drug trafficking and migration comprehensively with experts from both countries.

For its part, the Mexican Foreign Ministry, represented by Juan Ramón de la Fuente, advocated for respectful cooperation between both nations, rejecting Trump's accusations. Meanwhile, the Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, denounced the offense to Mexico and called for addressing the drug consumption problem in the United States.

On another front, the Morena party supported Sheinbaum, rejecting Trump's slander and highlighting the absence of links to drug trafficking in the current administrations. Evo Morales also supported Mexico against the tariffs, criticizing the political use of the fight against drugs and migration.

Various sectors, such as the Private Initiative, agreed to reject the tariffs and advocated for dialogue and cooperation to find solutions that respect the free trade established in the USMCA. In light of economic uncertainty, Sheinbaum announced a 'plan B' that includes tariff and non-tariff measures to defend Mexico's interests.

Emphasizing cooperation among neighbors, Sheinbaum proposed to work together to combat drug trafficking and pointed out the importance of protecting national dignity against external interference. The president also questioned the actions of the United States in stopping the sale of fentanyl on its territory and called for addressing the drug consumption problem from its internal roots.
